john curtin :: essays research papers
Regarded by many as one of Australias greatest Prime Ministers, John Curtin expect office just six weeks before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and led Australia through the darkest hours of World War II. No prime minister has had a more profound effect on Australia and no man has given more in the service of his office. Curtin was born in the Victorian mining townspeople of Creswick on January 8, 1885. His parents were Irish immigrants. His father worked first as a policeman, then as a publi gage, and the family moved frequently from town to town. His much interrupted teaching method ended when he left school at 14 and began to supplement the family incomeas a printers apprentice, a labourer, a clerk, and a newspaper copyboy which as you can see lead him to champion rights of lower society.Curtins interest in social issues and the plight of the working class led him to become actively gnarly in the labour movement and he joined the Victorian Socialist Party in 1906. He soon became k nown as an eloquent and animate speaker and this ability enabled him to unite the people of Australia in a way unprecedented then and unsurpassed since. John Curtin was just beginning his working life history as Australia became a Federated nation. Despite moving away from his Irish Catholic background, he was evidently influenced by it and by the poverty of his upbringing to have that Australia was not an equal society, and that the major task of a national government was to govern for the good of all the people. In 1917 he moved to Perth as editor of the Westralian Worker. While living in Western Australia, he developed a realisation that Federation disadvantaged some states. He believed that some of these weaknesses occurred because the reputation had not been followed closely enough. He never lost his faith in the spirit and intention of Federation. He first entered politics in 1928 as the process for Fremantle in the House of Representatives, but his term was cut short whe n Labor was defeated in 1931 and he lost his seat. However, one year after re-entering parliament in 1934, he was elected parliamentary leader and when the Fadden government collapsed, Curtin became Prime Minister in October, 1941He had a remarkable grasp of economics, and in iv years his government overhauled the national economy, creating full employment in the process. He and his cabinet made a number of other revolutionary changes in the textile of Australian life, particularly in the liberalisation of social welfare and immigration policies .

Compare And Contrast Essay -- essays research papers
One of my favorite things to do is to reminiscence with my father. It is so relaxing just to sit back and talk almost old times. Something that it really funny when my father and I discuss things from the past is the major differences between our pasts even though we both grew up in the resembling town. Now when people say that "times are a changing" I really know what they mean.     In my town there is a beautiful lake. The scenery around the lake is absolutely breath taking. When my father was younger, him and his friends would always swim in the lake. He would tell me amusing stories of the bike rides and walks down to the lake. My favorite part of the stories of the lake get to to be what him and his friends did before they actually jumped in the lake. They had to throw rocks in the water to scare away the snakes I couldnt even imagine swimming in a lake knowing that there were snakes in the water.     When I was younger, I was never aloud to go to the lake. The bike ride was extremely to far away for me and my friends to take on. The lake was post private property by new owners of homes in the area. Plus, as rumor has it, the lake is contaminated from a new large company in the area. Hence, I never spent my summer days swimming around in the lake in my town like my father did.     One of my beloveded memories deals with going to the local park. My mom or dad used to bring me there wi...

roll of thunder :: essays research papers
If you go back to the Old House, its in ruins and the Clock Tower is gone. that remember this place to come back later on when you have some items that you dont have at the moment... At Fathers House, the baby bird is spreading its wings. Unfortunately, it doesnt say anything with a Relay. One of the books you may be able to read now is here too Level 15 (Shield Pack). Dont worry if youre not up this high barely if you keep fighting monsters youll either get there, or youll spend so much on curing damage that youll eventually figure out you gather up to kill easier monsters for a while to get levels so you can add points to the Robots. It helps too if you raise the levels of the Robots weapons, or build and give them better Boots or Shields. If you did allot to get to Level 19 already, read the book for Weather and follow the instructions in the Scraps section to get ScrapB. You can do this later though, with no ill effects. OK, lets go on a trip to South Isle Go to the Harbor plain, which is monster-free. Talk to the man in the grass skirt, and so walk onto the boat. Wait while it toils across the seas of Quintenix. Youll arrive at the Pier area on South Isle. When you leave the area, the path to the Village area is revealed. band and more natives are in there, and the screen shakes along with a sound effect like a helicopter (on my emulator, at least) thats the Volcano. Theres a Tool sponsor in the Village, but it has the same stock as the one in Rococo and the prices are 50% higher. Find the Shamans house in the northwest, and then defer the Elders house in the northeast. Now visit the Shamans house, and note that blocked door in the first room for later. Or you can skip all the dry land information, including talking to the Mayor, and just talk to the native in the Inn and then moving into the left bed. There will be a dream chronological sequence with a gold robot at the Volcano. Talk to the native standing near the exit, and the path to the V olcano area will be revealed when you leave. The Volcano area is monster-free (for now). Explore it and get the Celtis 1 and $300 treasures before you talk to the native blocking the stairs to the hole.
Lets make the world a no clone zone :: essays research papers
lets Make the World a No-Clone Zone     Lets Make the World a No-Clone Zone is a actually straightforward and powerful article which lists many reasons why anything and everything about cloning should be illegal. In her article Therese M. Lysaught acknowledges there is plenty of factual information or counter evidence that her opposition might use to fight her argument. Her purpose for compose this article is to get it set in peoples minds that cloning is morally and ethically wrong and should be banned completely.      At the start of the article Therese has a very good thesis Banning the use of cloning to create babies doesnt go far enough, Even so-called therapeutic or research cloning involves the ending of human embryos and therefore is not only problematic, but also immoral (Lysaught par1). The thesis sets out her argument and lures the reader in with her powerful word weft and her appeal to emotion. Even if the readers already disag reed with the title they would be so intrigued by her well-written thesis they would have no choice but to just keep on reading.      Therese Lysaught is attacking anyone and everyone who feels cloning should be legal. But her main targets are those with the bigger voice, the politicians. She comes across very scare in stating her side of the issue, using a mussiness of easy-to-follow, factual information, which most people are more likely going to be able to understand. For example, according to Lysaught, cloning is a technique used to energise an embryo that is an exact copy of another organism, it does this "A sexually," which means without using sperm. There is also another form called reproductive cloning which is where the embryo is implanted into the womans womb and grown to test the effects of various toxins, or to mine them for their stem cells(Lysaught par7). Ms. Lysaught does a good job being intimidating while at the same time she works th e sympathy side of her issue, using the results of the animal test. A quote from her article states, In animals, more than 90 percent of cloning attempts fail to achieve live birth and live-born cloned animals suffer high rates of deformity and disability. Until these technical difficulties are worked out, the risk of harm to a cloned human is unacceptably high. (Lysaught par11) both of these approaches work well to push her argument.      She also anticipates questions and arguments from her opposition for example, In their so called views, cloning chances to stop human suffering outweighs moral and ethical concerns about embryonic life.

Bill Gates: Leader and Role Model Essay
business relationship Gates is an effective leader and leadership consumption model and he is my choice for a role a model. flush Gates has demonstrated and employed good leadership skills to be a successful business man. He has in like manner demonstrated why he is a good role model for those who want to become leaders themselves. I believe that I share many of the leadership traits with notice Gates and that those traits leave behind help me in my plan for success. The reasons I chose Bill Gates as my leadership role model are as follows he is one of the founders of Microsoft and has shown good leadership with the decisions he has made running the attach to and is also in the same field as my passage of study which is programming. Bill Gates has many qualities of a leader, and most notably is the fact that he drove his employees hard and himself harder (Boyd, 1995). Throughout the years Bill Gates has shown his leadership capabilities through his dedication and hard work b y the ever growing success of Microsoft. Another example of his leadership ability was when he released Windows 3.0 and won the competitiveness for the first GUI operating system, he did this by keeping his hand involved in all the major, potential competitors to his pet project while also continuing development of his own product (Boyd, 1995).A few of the characteristics of an effective leader are knowing the industry in which you plan to work, building your aggroup so that you have sufficient help to accomplish what you set out to do, and most importantly develop a vision and solid goal so the people that work for you know what they are works towards (Hill, 2009). Bill Gates has these traits as well as many more such as world motivated, being intelligent, and being hard working. In his earliest days developing DOS he would joke about what he called his seven-hour turnaround leave the routine late at night, go home, eat, sleep, and be back in the office only seven hours later, and he was proud of it (Boyd, 1995) this just goes to show how hard working he was.My own personal strengths that I have noticed are math, reading, technology (Cook, Week 2 CSI Summary, 2011), and being logical when it comes to problem solving (Cook, ain Profile(Week 2 Journal Entry), 2011) which I believe I share with Bill Gates. The reasons I believe that these personal strengths will help me to succeed are that it will make it easier to solve work related problems because of my logical thinking process (Cook, Personal Profile(Week 2 Journal Entry), 2011). Also these strengths are an ideal match for the career path that I have chosen with is computer programming. In the field of programming you need to be efficient in all of these areas in enounce to succeed.Critical thinking is going to play a big part in my plan for success it will help me to improve upon myself and to make weaken decisions, not only in my personal life but in my career as well. It will help me to not only kn ow what company I should work for, but also provide me with the best way to tackle particular projects at work. Leadership skills will also play a big part in my plan for success by making it easier to accomplish my goals and giving me more options for my career.By having leadership skills I wont be limited to just being a programmer I could in fact be a lead programmer heading up and directing an entire team. Accountability will help me to increase my chances of completing my goals of having a higher paying job that I love, like leadership skills will, but in a different way. It will make me more responsible because I am taking accountability for my actions whether it is positive or negative results. So by employing motivation, intellect, and hard work along with other leadership qualities Bill Gates has made Microsoft the company that it is today. So, with a little determination, hard work, and know how anyone idler be like Bill Gates and create a thriving company. So in conclusio n we should all strive to be like Bill Gates and be just as motivated and hard working in everything we do.ReferencesBoyd, A. (1995). Smart bullion the story of bill Gates. In A. Write Up on Detection of Fraud
DETECTION OF FRAUD (A Study on the Relations of humbug Detection, Redress and Reporting by he atomic number 18rs, protect against Fraud Detection the exercise of Auditors and the Effect of Auditors Personality) Prep atomic number 18d by- _________________________________________________________________________ PREFACE The objective of this assignment is to promote critical thinking on to what extent hearers come after with auditing standards once they encounter tommyrot and auditors compliance on managing humbug, the debate on auditors negligence when it comes to impostor and the side effects of baloney contr exertioning towards spirit.A selection of one-third articles that were chosen in identifying and subsequently analyse the impact of prank towards an individual, group or at heart an organisation. The three articles are- * Protecting against Detection The Case of Auditors and Fraud? * Fraud chanceion, redress and writinging by auditors, * Fraud Risk Assessment and Detection of Fraud The Moderating Effect of Personality. The objective for this assignment is to aim on the alliance amongst the auditors superpower to assess hoax essay and the exponent to detect the likeliness of fraud. Also, this rent considers the overall trend of development and the prospects for future changes regarding the auditors fraud detection responsibilities. INTRODUCTION Most of the individuals feel that auditors fail to comply with some important elements of fraud standards. Fraud represents a significant and dispute issue throughout the accounting traffic practically almost everywhere in the world.Dramatic financial scandals often takes place as soon after companies accepted apparent green light from their auditors have kept the issue of fraud and the responsibility for its detection closely relate to auditors in particular. Auditors are required by the auditing standards to provide reason fitted assurance that the financial statements are free from any mis statements. Inability to accomplish so particularly fraud whitethorn expose the auditors to litigation. The detection of fraud is the most important portion of the auditors duties. Therefore, auditors should assiduously cultivate this branch of their activities. (Dicksee, 1990). Whenever there is a sudden alarm and collapse within the company, people tend to assume that the auditors negligently failed to spot something was wrong and the auditors failed to solve the issue. Detection of fraud is no longer the principal audit objective entirely rather the subsidiary to the determination of the rightfulness and fairness of integrated financial statements. This development in verbalize audit objectives is often portrayed as a process of natural, uncontroversial evolution in which dutyal guidance came to meet changing public expectations and circumstances (Tricker, 1982). The growth in the size of business, the assumption of corporate management of a greater responsibility for fraud d etection and a broad acceptance of the increasingly uneconomic nature of audit- ground fraud detection are usually identified as the main causes of the changing nature of audit responsibilities (CACA, 1986).CENTRAL ISSUES & PROBLEMS When it comes to redress, it relates to the auditee taking measures situations where fraud has been detected. Given the existing standards on the grapheme of auditors in fraud situations, the existence performance gap in this context can be due to several factors, including the lack of knowledge or competence on how to act once corporate fraud is detected, lack of care in following protocol or the lack of independence of the auditor possibly because conflicting of interest.Given the lovesome nature of fraud account towards the societys expectations, compliance with fraud standards is crucial nowadays. 56% from recent surveys said that expectations of auditors rely on the auditors duty to detect fraud, while 42% believed that it is the responsibility t o search actively for fraud (Steen, 1990). The issue of fraud is very essential for public accountants and auditors because litigation actions may be taken against them should they not be fit to detect fraud during the conduct of the audit.Take for example when Xerox was sanctioned for overstating earnings by US$3 billion, its auditor KPMG was liable for US$22 million in penalties (Ettradge, Sun, Lee & Anandarajan, 2005). The present scenario is an extension whereby study shown that the effect of the auditors ability to assess fraud risk on their ability to detect the likelihood of fraud. High fraud risk scenario, the auditors ability to assess fraud risk has positive effect on their ability to detect the likelihood of fraud, whereas in a low fraud risk scenario not.Adding to that study, an another(prenominal) factor which is the personality may affect the ability to detect the likelihood of fraud. The study predicts that there might be other factor that affects the auditors job performance that is in the ability to detect the likelihood of fraud. belles-lettres REVIEW The present study predicts that personality might have only moderating effect on the fraud detection ability. The present study illustrates and examines Big-5 factors of personality that are neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience and agreeableness because these factors are the basic dimensions of personality and it is predominantly viewed that many personality traits are subsumed under these five categories. This shows that personality does crop job performance and by investigating the moderating affects of the personality factors on the relationship between the auditors ability to assess fraud risk and their ability to detect the likelihood of fraud.Attribution Theory This theory suggests that the level of future expected performance, in a particular task depends mainly on the particular causes to which prior victor or failure in the same task is attributed. T his theory is appropriate because there is a need to assess the causal attribution of the auditors performance, i. e ability to detect the likelihood of fraud. With this study, the level of the future expected liability to detect the likelihood of fraud is attributed by the auditors prior ability to assess the level of fraud risk.Five-factor Theory 1. Neuroticism as a personality trait * This study shows that auditors who are high on neuroticism will not be able to perform effectively in their job as compared to those who are low on neuroticism, because those with high neuroticism tend to show negative attitudes. With much(prenominal) attitudes demonstrate, the auditors may not be able to appropriately detect the likelihood of fraud. In any fraud situation, high on neuroticism would diminish the relationship between the ability to assess the risk and the ability to detect fraud altogether. . Extraversion as a personality trait * When a person is experiencing positive emotions, it m ay influence them to perform well in their job. In any risk situation, high on extraversion would have positive influence on the relationship between the auditors ability to assess fraud risk. 3. Conscientiousness as a personality trait * Individuals with high level of conscientiousness may be able to perform well in the job because of the characters such as organized and reliable are important facets for carrying out the audit work. 4.Openness to experience as a personality trait * An auditor is more open to experience he/she should be more able to detect the likelihood of fraud. Possessing traits such as intellectually curious, behaviorally flexible and nondogmatic in attitude and values can be considered as essential to conduct risk. 5. Agreeableness as a personality trait * Auditor who demonstrates high level of agreeableness in his/her personality such as cooperativeness, trustfulness and adaptability would make them more competent in performing the jobs.METHODOLOGY The informa tion pertaining to the study on the role of auditors in fraud cases, survey was conducted among audit partners of Dutch firms. The questionnaire contained three questions which were- 1. Questions relating to the features of the fraud cases auditors had experienced in the period. 2. Questions on the encompassing and redress of the fraud cases 3. Questions on the perceived role of auditor in the redress process. The overall respond is satisfactory, especially considering the sensitive nature of the study.Secondly, in the study of the personality traits, 2 levels of ability to assess fraud risk and two levels of each dimension of personality factor. The factors of personality are neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience and agreeableness. The study also practicing the self-sufficient auditors registered in Malaysia, designated as audit partner or audit manager who are attached to the auditing firms in Malaysia. FINDINGS Most auditors who do have experienc e eliminated fraud believe that fraud detection and process are often significant in order to minimize risk.Auditors reporting of fraud according to the fraud standards and regulations are defined as below. 1. Reporting to management. As soon as auditors detect fraud or receive signals that could interpret as such, the auditor needs to report this to management in writing. 2. Reporting to the supervisory Board. auditing standards explicitly required certain types of fraud to be reported in writing to the supervisory board such as cases of management fraud, cases of material fraud, and cases whereby management refuses to redress the fraud. 3.The redress process. when the auditor has detected fraud and management has not yet taken appropriate move to redress the effects of fraud, the auditor is required to demand that the fraud be redressed, i. e. the consequences of the fraud have to be rectified as far as mathematical and recurrence needs to be prevented. 4. Auditor resignation . The auditing standards allowed auditor to resign from the assignment of the fraud but required the auditor to resign if the case of material fraud was not redressed. 5. External reporting of fraud. Finally, the auditing standards state that when material fraud discovered during a statutory audit has not been redressed by the audit client within a reasonable time frame, the auditor is not only required to resign from the engagement, but also to notify the dedicated government agency. Such effect also plus the expansion of auditors fraud detection responsibilities by assuming of willingness to play more active role in assessing and reporting on the adequacy of the companys system and internal controls.Matters that should take into consideration when considering the disclosure is justified in the public interest may take on * Fraud irregularities is possible to result in material gain or loss that effect a large number of people, * The extent to which non-disclosure of fraud is l ikely to enable it to be repeated with impunity, * Whether there is general management ethos within the entity of flouting the law and regulations, * The weight of evidence and the auditors assessment of the likelihood that fraud has been committed. CONCLUSIONIn attempting to interpret and understand changing audit responsibilities, there would appear to be much to be gained by moving beyond traditional rationalizations of a profession responding directly to public demands. Various changes can be regarded as reflective of the conflicting, political nature of a self-regulated accounting profession and the outcomes dependent on the professions pursuit of professional interests and the professions attempts to manage the interplay between its own interests and any competing public duties and obligations. It is right to acknowledge that public expectation that auditors should report suspected fraud was reasonable. It is recommended that auditors should be given greater encouragement to re port whatever that is necessary and fit in reporting fraud detection. Additionally, it emphasized the role of internal control in the prevention and detection of fraud and suggested that where there was a legal responsibility for internal control systems, auditors should have a baronial duty to report on their adequacy.Changes in the law would have a statutory duty to report suspected fraud at the same time. It stated that auditors should be left at liberty to report cases of fraud to the authorities without statutory backing and that any change in the current position could be accomplished through revising the ethical guidance to auditors on professional conduct. Auditors have the duties to the rest of the community of which they are part and they owe to the community a more compelling duty which must on occasion take first place.Public expectation must be given full weight in all matters (Accountancy Age, 12 December 1985). In developing auditing guidance concerning to fraud, thr ee considerations have proved dominant * The relative responsibilities of management and auditors for the prevention and detection of fraud, other illegal acts and irregularities and errors * The conduct of an audit in order to have a reasonable expectations of detect significant misstatements * The action to be taken when errors are discovered. With applaud to the prevention and detection, all proposed guidance has emphasized the paramount responsibility of management, with the auditors responsibility being couched consistently in terms of materiality and the truth and fairness of the financial statements. The role of auditors is to properly plan, perform and evaluate his/her audit work so as to have a reasonable expectation of detecting material misstatements in the financial statements, whether they are caused by fraud, irregularities or errors.LIMITATIONS Auditors in any circumstances have no duty to act as an bum to the extent where it would jeopardise or destroy the trust an d confidentiality on which it felt that auditing depended. The use of word informer indicates a somewhat dismissive attitude to the curtain raising of breaking the confidential relationship with the management or publics expectation.Considerable resistance among auditors to the ideas that they should accept a general responsibility to detect fraud or extend their reporting responsibilities in the interest of the public. Whether changing audit responsibilities concerning detection of fraud come voluntarily or statutorily, such changes need to be based on greater awareness and continuing public investigation of the operation and capabilities of the audit function is this regard. Otherwise, it would anticipate that the position in the future will be with nfortunate, be little different in the roles and responsibilities of the accountancy profession towards the public interest. This makes it possible for the terrorists to be referred to as criminals, making it easy to hunt terrorists according to the law and with popular support. When a government or an organization plans and implements a counter-terrorism strategy, there is need to understand how terrorism efforts violate the human rights. This in turn enables the governments to develop effective measures that ensure that severe and appropriate actions argon taken against the terrorists who atomic digit 18 locatinged as human rights violators, a situation that may repel others from participating in terrorists activities.Counter-terrorism experts are able to eradicate any terrorist organization if they correctly and accurately understand the terrorists motives, where one is able to understand the terrorists thoughts so that one can anticipate their next move correctly to stop it on time. In the ground forces and other countries, terrorists mot ives are many and they vary (Crank, J. et al.. 2005). In the USA, Some of the general motives that might be found in terrorists include, political motives, fighting for the injustice of a accustomed group of people, economic superiority as well as the innovation of fear and a sense of in trade protection in the American citizens. When they view themselves as the underserved underdogs on a mission, the terrorists use the strategy of using the weak to weaken the strong and to strengthen the weak. Question 2 Is counterterrorism a tactic of state of war or crime-fighting? What role does due process play in either context? What are the implications when terrorists can be characterized as the enemy rather than unsullied criminals? Counterterrorism can be used as both a warfare tactic or as a crime fighting tactic. However, in the unite States counterterrorism is usually used as a crime- fighting tactic. For instance, the computer and the Internet are used to undertake warfare actions t hrough the cyber space. Counter terrorism as a warfare tactic is then used and can be used to stop people from using terrorism tactics against a given nation or organization. In such a case, comprehensive tools can be used to deal with possible terrorist incidents and can further be used to repulse attacks that have been directed against a nation. As a crime fighting tactic, counter terrorism is used by the law enforcement authorities to hunt down terrorists who have been labeled as criminals. The authorities normally cut off hard-core terrorists from external sources of supply so as to label terrorists as criminals, and then use the law to easily hunt the terrorists down (Combs. 2005). When terrorists are referred to as enemy instead of criminal, it encourages more terrorists attacks or strengthening of terrorist organizations. For example, it leads to the enlisting of more followers in the terrorist organizations be type those who are recruited have developed great desire to become fighters against their enemy. The labeling of terrorists as an enemy serves as a motivation for each group to strengthen itself to attack another group they view as enemy. It further encourages terrorism behavior of solidarity, loyalty and self protection even when the group faces difficult times. The members get convinced that they need to protect themselves from a group that views them as an enemy. Finally, referring to terrorists as enemy instead of criminals makes it very hard for the concerned organization or government to hunt down the terrorist according to the law.In addition, the organization lacks the popular support to hunt down the terrorists (Crank. J et al.. 2005) because they are seen as just revenging against other people with an unjustified reason. The terrorists cannot be tracked down in pursuit of justice which makes it difficult to use force against hard-core terrorists with the use of brutal force generating more terrorism and terrorists. Question 3 How has su perintendence changed from the traditional to vernal watchfulness? Are these changes potentially problematic for civil liberties in any way in the United States?Should law enforcement be leaseted to use all technological resources available to accomplish its mission including in the fight against terror? Are there limits? Traditionally, counterterrorism strategies and techniques against terror acts were hugely the responsibility of the military force, and the level of watch not as intensive as it is in the new strategies of surveillance. The major reason for this is that in the past, terrorism acts were not as many as they are in the modern world.Traditional institutions approved surveillance that when it was seriously prerequisite to do so, as compared to new surveillance which has been blamed for overstepping the bounders. The ever increasing terrorist attacks against certain states in the world have demanded the development of many and effect counter terrorism measures thr ough surveillance, in comparison to the traditional surveillance. In new surveillance, building of the counterterrorism plans has integrated all the segments of the society or government agencies (Mahan, S and Griset, P. 2007).New surveillance has seen the development of counterterrorism strategies that have increased both the standard of the police as well as domestic intelligence. While traditional surveillance involved the interception of confabulation and tracing of the rumed terrorists, new surveillance has expanded its ways of operation due to the advancement in technology. For instance, new surveillance has managed to expand the range of both the law and the military enforcement operations. The direction of domestic intelligence at specific groups that is based on origin and religion is a feature of the new surveillance.Mass surveillance is also done in new surveillance where an entire population is investigated. In the United States, changes in the surveillance have raised concerns based on the civil liberties. One good example is the mass surveillance which involves the surveillance of an entire population, an issue that has been objected since it is considered to defy civil liberty of the citizens (http//www. usatoday. com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa-x. htm). The surveillance defies the citizens liberty in that mass surveillance is done whether or not there is the consent of those being surveyed.Furthermore, surveillance is done whether it serves or it does not serve the citizens interest. For instance, use of a network of secret police informers is considered a new surveillance abuse. In the United States, the government has been accused of illegally cooperating with the National Security Agency to monitor the US citizens phone records. Further allegations that the government has conducted electronic surveillances of domestic phone calls without warrants are an issue that has been said to go against the civil liberty. However, the law enforceme nt organizations should not be fully allowed to use technological resources to fight terror. This is because uncontrolled use consequently may result to severe ostracize effects. For instance, there have been round instances where technological measures against terror have resulted to the abuse and violation of the human rights. The return and extradition of people within countries and restriction of freedom of citizens are some of the examples that violate human rights during the process of counterterrorism.Invasion of peoples private lives through technology-advanced tools need to be stopped by limiting how far the law enforcement bodies should go to fight terror. Lack of a boundary within which technology can be used poses a great risk, where the authorities may undertake counterterrorism practices while they violate the human rights at the same time. Question 4 What is the FISA coquet? Explain how it works. What authorities can it grant law enforcement? How is it different f rom traditional motor lodges? What concerns exist about expanding the use of FISA?A FISA court refers to a secret court in the USA that has the responsibility of approving the taps that target the terrorists. It was established and has been working since 1979 to ensure that terrorists and foreign agents are monitored. The FISA court was established under the 1978 US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance good turn. The court has approved domestic wiretaps and has continued to compensate very sensitive domestic wiretaps in the US national certification investigations (media filter. org/CAQ/cqq53. court. html). The FISA court operates through a process that is based on probable cause. An finishing to a FISA court judge is normally make by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) if it believes that it can show probable cause that the target of the surveillance is either a suspected terrorist or a foreign agent. The application should contain 4 documents a request for a wiretap, FBI directors or executive branch officials certification that information cannot be acquired through the normal investigative tactics, and an FBI supervisory affidavit with a statement of fact about the target of surveillance. This is then followed by the submission of the documents to the Justice Department for the Justice Department attorneys review. The application is then forwarded to the FISA court and presented to a federal judge. There are 10 federal adjudicate in the FISA court who sit on the court on a rotating basis. The FISA court grants office to the law enforcement authorities based on the probable cause presented to them. It gives warrant to the authorities to conduct surveillance on a suspected target, if enough evidence is provided in the court to justify why a suspect should be surveyed. It receives an application if the FBI director certifies that there is need to obtain information above the normal investigative tactics. Clear indication of facts about the target of surveillance is also demanded by the FISA court before they give the authority and the judges often demand for more details about the targeted communication to authorize or approve a wiretap. It maintains a high rate of secrecy where a judge can make an ultimate decision to approve a wiretap (FISA orders 1979-2004)The FISA court is different from the traditional court in its secret nature of operation where the court makes eulogy of the applications in secret. Furthermore, the FISA court is considered to have acquired expanded authority than a traditional court to approve surveillance applications made, after Presidents Clinton signing of the Executive Order 12949. Unlike in the traditional courts, the FISA court evidence can be used in criminal trials after the 1995 refinement as compared to the traditional courts where the evidence could only be collected and stockpiled only for intelligence purposes. The FISA court has expanded powers and it has the authority to allow both the e lectronic and physical searches due to its expanded powers. The expansion of using the FISA court in the USA has raised great concern. One concern of the FISA court expansion is the possibility of governments extreme intrusion into peoples private lives. Because the court operates secretly, government measures that may intrude into people lives unnecessarily may result. Another great concern is the fact that, it promotes surveillance that defies people of their liberty. For instance, the expansion of the FISA court has made it able to give legal authority to approve black-bag operations, that authorize the Department of Justice to conduct both electronic and physical searches without an open court warrant. Furthermore, the subjects are not notified and an inventory of seized items not provided. Sometimes the surveillance allowed by the FISA court is considered to be unconstitutional. The civil liberty lawyers in the United States have stated that some searches that have been conduct ed are unconstitutional. It is a great worry that under the FISA court cover of secrecy, the court is likely to exceed its own broad legal mandate. The expansion of the court has been argued to have been motivated by the governments need to conduct searches they would not have been allowed to undertake under the nations national provisions. For instance, the US government may attempt and fail under the traditional constitutional argument to secure a search warrant, but it would go to FISA court and secure approval for a search by converting the case into a national security investigation. Question 5 How has air power security changed since 9111?What were the provision of the Aviation and Transportation dress? Did this Act change Aviation security in a dramatic way? What role does racial and religious profiling play in securing the aviation industry and its consumers? What role should it play? Before the 9/11 terrorist attack, the aviation security in the USA was the responsibility of the Federal Aviation Administration within the Department of conveyance. However after the 9/11 attack there was great urgency in securing the US nations entire transportation systems. The federal agencies concerned with transport security were transferred to the Department of Homeland security (www.encyclopedia. com/doc/iG2-34033000149. html). The need to increase aviation security after the 9/11 led to the enactment of the Aviation and Transportation Act on Nov 19, 2001. This saw the creation of the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) within the DOT (Department of Transportation). The Act permits the existing authorities to permit the TSA to flexibly manage and deploy the workforce to carry out important security work where the national security is concerned. The act mandates the increase in the number of federal air marshals and has placed the US airport security screeners under federal control. All the screeners were required to be US citizens, though the provision w as ulterior changed by American Civil Liberties Union. It was the Acts provision that all the bags in the airports to be first screened and then matched to the passengers. Another provision of the Act was the $1. 5 billion award to the airports and private contractors so that the direct costs of meeting new security requirements were met. Checks for baggage in the airports was made necessary with cover song recommended by use of explosive detection machinery or manual methods. The Act allowed the Transportation Secretary to authorize airports to use all the necessary equipment for the chemical and biological weapons detection. The Act did change the aviation security dramatically. For instance, before the 9/11 attack, the civil aviation security was handled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). After the creation of the Act, the civil aviation security was put under the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There were also changes in the federal statutes that covere d aviation security (contained in title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Chapter XII).The provisions that were made by the Act changed security practices in the airports with the airports implementing changes in the checking and screening procedures, where tight security procedures were and are still being developed. The placement of the airport security screeners under federal control made changes when all screeners were required to be US citizens and the interconnected of bags to passengers was made necessary with new security requirements adopted in airports. Racial and religious profiling in the US Aviation Security practices has been seen by some as illegal and inconsistent with American values (travelsecurity.blogspot. com/2007/09lantos-warns-tsa-against-religious. html). Furthermore, this profiling is detrimental to the national security. Civil liberties of some religious groups have claimed that TSA employees conduct secondary screening for passengers wearing religious clothing. For instance, TSA employees have discriminated the Sikh by ordering Sikh Americans to remove their turbans, which defies their faith. There have been an estimated 50 incidents of religious discrimination since the institution of the new policy. Racial and religious profiling has led to discrimination and humiliation of people including the ordinary Americans. The practice leads to stereotyping of some citizens as terrorists and provokes a sense of fear against exculpated citizens. The racial and religious profiling should instead promote changes that will prevent discrimination and humiliation of travelers. The profiling should not be used as a means of abuse but instead should be used with respect for the civilians. Exposing people to extra screening procedures simply because they belong to a certain wash or religion should be done away with, but instead everyone subjected to the procedures to promote equality. One night Pilar sees her father with another women, she runs a vogue to Miami to catch a flight to be in her beloved Cuba. Little does Pilar know her feelings about Cuba are about to change. Pilar wants nothing more but to go back to Cuba. In the beginning of the novel Cuba represents something that was taken from her, something she wants back, something she wants to be apart of, something that she feels like she lost. She feels like her mother Lourdes is restraining her from holding to her beloved Cuba. This is mayhap the reason why Pilar feels more connected with her grandma Celia in the beginning of the novel than her mother Lourdes. Celia loves Cuba the way Pilar thinks she loves Cuba. Pilar and Lourdes eventually return to Cuba for a week to see the family, reuniting them with Celia. When Pilar is finally in Cuba she re alizes that it is not what she fantasized it to be. Pilar starts to realize all of the pauperization in Cuba. She states, look at those old American cars held together by rubber bands, dont you know you could defend new Cadillacs with leather seats and power windows (Garcia 221).Pilar is still innocent at this point in the novel. She doesnt understand the poverty in Cuba. Pilar similarly realizes that her and her grandmother Celia arent all that similar. She was searching for a mother like relationship with Celia because she thought they connected better than her and Lourdes did however Pilar realizes that they are way different. They are so different its almost as if they speak different languages. Pilar realizes the toll Cuba had on her grandmother, she is old and run down both physically and mentally.Pilar realizes that Cuba did this to her grandmother. Perhaps what solidifies Pilar knowing she belongs in NY is the dead reckoning where she gets hit in the face with the rock when trying to find Invanito. Blood is running down her face. She states that art couldnt possibly capture what she was feeling at this moment. (Garcia)This is a way different Pilar then the beginning of the book. Meaning that some things in life you just take over to experience for yourself before you can have an accurate opinion.Pilar states that she belongs in NY by the end of the novel after being sure in the beginning of the novel that she belonged in Cuba. Pilar realized all the freedoms the United States gave her that Cuba couldnt. Pilar realizes she couldnt paint pictures she paints in the United States in Cuba. Pilar also realizes how serious the poverty and the fighting is in Cuba. Pilar realizes the toll Cuba had on her grandmother. Pilar like her mother Lourdes realizes how great of a place the United States could be.In the beginning of the novel Pilar took the freedoms that the United States gave her f or granted, however only when she went to Cuba and had those freedoms taken away does she realize how great they really are. Section 2 1) Using a short story we have read and discussed during week 4, discuss how a parent/child relationship can enable but also inhibit an girlishs mind, emotional, and or spiritual suppuration. As a child you learn how to function in society by watching and learning from the people around you. The people that are around most as a child are your parents and siblings.A Parent/child relationship can enable but also inhibit an adolescents intellectual and emotional growth. In the short story Bad Girls by Joyce Oates, Marietta Murchison has three girls Icy, Orchid, and Crystal and their parent/child relationship does just that. Marietta is a single mom and her three daughters are in their teenage years. There are no instances in the text that suggest bad parenting from Marietta. She loves her daughters and puts them as her come in one priory over everyth ing else. She even puts them over her relationship with Drum. Momma made her decision, like throwing a bolt to a lock door forever, she believed icy. She would never firing off in believing in Icy. Saying, Nobody hurts my girls and gets away with it (Oates 424). Of course having a mother who loved them and put them first before anyone else enabled them intellectually and emotionally. This allowed them to go to prepare and to have a home with love. However with raising children everything isnt black and white, children learn things not only through experiences they go through but also the experiences their mother goes through.During the course of the story Marietta dates some guys, and it is implied that she has been dating guys for a while. The girls father left when they were very young so they already developed a negative connotation towards men. Their mom moves from one meaningless relationship to the next, their entire lives. This forces them to never trust any guy. They are confused and biased towards men. grove states, Can a man have such feelings, like a women? Can a man be hurt? Is that possible? (Oates). Orchards and the rest of the girls have a take on men that is severely skewed. The reason it is skewed is due to their mothers relationships and experiences. Marietta Murchison was a great mom. She loved her girls very much and did everything in her power to protect them. This enabled her girls in a positive way to grow intellectually and emotionally. However her mom inadvertently inhibits their intellectual and emotional growth through her experiences and relationships. Her experiences and relationships force her girls to unintentionally distrust and misunderstand men. The Parent/child relationship between Marietta and her daughters enabled but also inhibited the adolescents intellectual and emotional growth.

American Culture and Heroes
Ameri posterior Culture and Heroes American Culture and Heroes Heroes ar not rifleforce with capes or super powers as they are portrayed in American culture today. Mike Dilbeck, www. raproject. org, receipt Ability Project, 2012 The Oxford American College Dictionary, (2002), e-book Ashford University Library, says that a hero is a person, typic either y a man, who is admired for courage or noble qualifications. A firefighter, police officer and a soldier (man or woman) would fall under this description of a hero.Arthur Ashe said it best. True heroism is remarkably sober, very un-dramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others? at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost. Characteristics of a hero are 1. Courage A hero overcomes his fears and takes a argufy head on. There is not even a twinge of fear in the heroes heart. 2. Virtuosity The key aspect of a heros character. 3. Wisdom is an attribu te that all heroes possess, be it a soldier, firefighter, or a police officer. A hero is not born, they are self-made. These characteristics are what set a hero apart from. www. personalitytutor. com/qualities-of-a-hero. hypertext mark-up language In our American culture the media has changed the meaning of a hero. Reality television receiver has become a part of our everyday lives and has changed the way in which we perceive the true hero. Hall, Alice, viewing audience Perceptions of Reality Programs, Communication Quarterly Vol. 4, No. 2, May 2006, pp 191-211. The media is making it seem like everyone is a hero. In ingenuousness television, such as Survivor or The Great American Race, the media has made the person that completes the challenges a hero. They play on the thoughts of Americans who want to believe. According to the media, someone surviving on this show is touted as a hero. An example of the appeal to reality television is the perceived novelty and value on real peo ple experience and not actors. Reality television shows that the everyday person can succeed and do not have to be famous to do it.Reality Television is not all bad. It shows people that anyone can do anything, giving the everyday white collar person hope. But it also tempts people to try things that they should never do without proper supervision. (Jack Ass) Given the clip a family is apart, due to work, school, and other outside obligations, less time watching reality television and more family time is needed. Reality television is making nevertheless anybody a hero and not the people that actually deserve to be considered a hero. The real heroes are the people who fight for our freedom and our safety. As stated in the book Teaching and Learning in the Age of development, Tyner, Kathleen R. , Literacy in a Digital world. Teaching and Learning in the Age of Information. 1998 Ashford University Library, how literacy in America during the red-hot information age has changed due to computers and the usage of doing all query from the point of websites, compared to the time when you had to do research by actually going to the library and doing research for the right books and then sitting down and taking notes and writing everything down by hand.I believe that what this means is that by having the new information age and the reality television and the media that is portraying things as they want them to appear, people are not as literate as they once were. Literacy has sustained through the development of the Information Age over the past 25 years, Rassool, Naz, Literacy for Sustainable Development in the Age of Information, 1999, Ashford University Library e-book, this is true. People beneficial dont have to work for it like they used to.This once again falls back to where the people that actually deserve the credit do not get it and they are just put in the pool with everyone else and whoever is lucky enough to be picked on that particular day will be the o ne that is commended. In conclusion the way that people perceive a hero is all in how they live their everyday lives and what they believe in. If they believe the Survivor winner, Richard Hatch, is a hero then they are the very people that have changed the way that people perceive a hero. Jeff Bezos Essay
Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur who was in truth influential in the growth of e-commerce. He is the chief executive and founder of Amazon.com, Inc., a caller-out that began as an online merchant of books forwards it expanded to a wide variety of products. Amazon.com is the largest retailer on the internet and the model for internet sales. fit to Drexler (2007), Bezos began his early career in house school. He developed the Dream institute which promoted creative view among the young students. He graduated in 1986 from Princeton University with two degrees, computer science and electrical engineering. In 1990, he joined D.E Shaw & Co. where he became the vice president. In 1994, he quit the company and opened a realistic bookstore in Seattle, Washington. He worked from his garage for a while as he developed the computer software for his site which he named Amazon.com.The greatest challenge for the company came in 1995, when Bezos needed cash to launch his company. He nee ded $1 million to keep the company running for at least 2 years. It was very challenging because he needed the whole $1 million at once. According to him, this was a cadence when the company could generate collapsed even before it got sop uped. It was difficult for garmentors to fund his idea because they were skeptical closely the say-so of the internet. Ultimately, he managed to raise the whole amount from about 20 angel investors. Another challenge was convince people to buy products via the internet when they could make a special order from retailers and get the product at their door step. In addition, every retailer streamed online (Drexler, 2007). Because of the competition, the companys market capital dropped from $32.1 one million million million to $8.9 billion in six years. Some people even called it Amazon.org because it seemed like a non-profit company.Bezos is eager to maintain the triumph of his business for many years. Kendrick & Vershinina (2010) assert that he created an excellent brand that strives on adapting to the evolving business environment and uniform growth. He believes that if customers get a great experience from a retailer, they will definitely tell others about it. Therefore, the word of mouth is a great marketing tool. He has been described by many as a laugh satisfactory and goofy individual, a personality that is carried to the work environment. He keeps the employees happy but ensures that they reachthe companys goals. However, his word is always final. As much as everyone is allowed to be innovative, the final finish comes from Bezos. This kind of leadership limits what the executives can do but that is the culture at Amazon. One of the former employees alleged that Amazon.com is to some extend run as a sole proprietorship (Kendrick & Vershinina, 2010).The culture of Amazon promotes bareness among all employees. The top watchfulness, including Bezos, supports this culture and every other employee adheres to it. It has allowed everyone to share any innovations and different ideas that would make the company better. Because of the advance, a customer can use his previous payment information to buy other products, finished the one-click ordering technology. Bezos concern style is customer-centric (Marques, 2007). The company understands that it is all about providing what the customer wants.According to Daft & Marcic (2010), Bezos management style also ensures that the leaders keep their egos in check. The needs of the company come before the managements whims. Nonetheless, he also ensures that the management works together to improve the brand and leadership style. hebdomadally management meetings are held for four hours. The executives are expected to make presentations regarding new products, pricing strategies, technologies, or cost-control measures in the company. He then asks questions to his satisfaction. Therefore he is very strict and precise on what should be done. He asks for e very possible form of evidence or data on the problem being tackled. As a leader, he is also persevering and hardworking. Despite all the struggles he went through to begin his company. He persevered and worked hard to remain competitive. In fact, he argues that most investors give up too quickly. If he had give up, he would not have managed to raise $1million to launch his company. Moreover, he believes that ownership matters when building a smashing company (Marques, 2007). The owner of a company thinks long-term unlike an employee who thinks in terms of his salary. Therefore, the owner is able to plead passionately to ensure that his ideas and projects succeed. His hiring bar is raised higher. When hiring, he looks for people he can enjoy and learn from. Therefore, he looks for the best employees and does not compromise on the right skills and quality of work. However, Bezos asserts that Amazon is not always keen on what will happen in the next quarter. The company is willing to invest in an employee and wait to reap the benefits in future. Further more(prenominal), he only spends money on the issues that matter. For the companys headquarters in 1990s was located on Seattles skid row. Even when the company was expense about $500 million, the company was still located in the same building. Bezos believes in spending money on things that matter (Daft & Marcic, 2010).Nonetheless, there is the Just Do It award that is given to employees who come up with validating innovations for the company (Thompson, 2011). It encourages employees to be creative. He also encourages innovation by hosting monthly lectures from renowned scientists. The lectures are aimed to effervesce new ideas in the employees that could revolutionize the company. However, he also decides whether or not an employee can pursue a new idea. The company also has special days where employees can come to work with their children.
